Personal Automobile Insurance is a policy designed to provide both Property & Liability protection while operating a personal automobile. There is a wide array of coverages and policy limits to contemplate prior to purchasing an automobile policy, however, all personal automobile policies issued in the State of New Jersey offer the following coverages:
Mandatory Coverages
Bodily Injury: provides coverage for medical expense, loss of wages, pain & suffering, and legal defense to others who are damaged by an insured vehicle
Property Damage: provides coverage for damage to a claimant’s property (i.e. fence, shrubs, house, retaining wall, etc...) as well as legal defense
Personal Injury Protection: provides medical expense, loss of income, funeral expenses, death benefits and essential services subject to policy limits. All policyholders, resident relatives, and authorized drivers are eligible for benefits
Optional Coverages
Medical Payments: provides coverage for medical expenses for anyone in the insured vehicle who is physically injured in an accident involving the insured vehicle
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury: provides coverage to individuals injured in an accident caused by a vehicle which is not adequately insured or has no insurance at all. This coverage is eligible for policyholders, family members, and passengers
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Property Damage: provides property damage coverage to policyholders whose vehicle is involved in an accident with a vehicle which is not adequately insured or has no insurance at all
Collision Coverage: provides coverage for scheduled vehicles damaged by an impact with another vehicle or object
Other Than Collision: provides coverage for damage to scheduled vehicles by any cause of loss other than collision and other items specifically excluded
Unlike a Commercial Automobile Policy which provides Combined Single Limit coverage for both bodily injury and property damage claims, a standard Personal Automobile Policy is written using Split Limits. Split Limits provide a maximum amount that will be paid per person and per accident. Split Limits commonly used when writing a New Jersey Personal Automobile Policy include:
$100,000 Bodily Injury Per Person
$300,000 Bodily Injury Per Accident
$100,000 Property Damage Per Accident
$250,000 Bodily Injury Per Person
$500,000 Bodily Injury Per Accident
$250,000 Property Damage Per Accident
$500,000 Bodily Injury Per Person
$500,000 Bodily Injury Per Accident
$500,000 Property Damage Per Accident
