Why Do You Need Auto Insurance?
Auto insurance helps provide protection from the negative financial effects of a car accident. The law mandates that you must carry liability coverage. You can also choose to buy coverage that helps protect your property, no matter who is at fault in an accident.
Mandatory Auto Insurance in New Jersey
In New Jersey, drivers must carry a minimum amount of auto insurance liability coverage. This policy provides coverage for the following:
-
-
Liability insurance: This coverage helps pay for claims and lawsuits if a third party is injured or someone else’s property is damaged due to an accident you caused. It does not pay for medical costs.
-
Personal injury protection (PIP): Pays medical expenses if you or passengers that are covered under the policy are injured in an accident. This can also be referred to as no fault coverage as it covers your medical bills regardless of who was at fault of the car accident.
If an uninsured driver causes an accident and your vehicle is damaged or you are injured, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage helps pay to repair or replace your vehicle and cover your medical bills up to the policy's limits.

Optional Auto Insurance Coverage
The following auto insurance policies are optional:
-
Comprehensive insurance: This coverage helps pay to repair or replace your vehicle if it's damaged in an accident not involving another vehicle, such as theft or vandalism, fire, collision with an animal, or a single-car accident that involves falling or rolling over.
If you have a loan or lease on your car, your lienholder may require you to add collision and comprehensive insurance to your auto liability policy to help protect their financial interests in your vehicle. They may also require GAP insurance.
GAP insurance: If you are in an accident and your vehicle is a total loss, your insurance company may provide you with a lump sum of money equal to the fair market value of your car minus your deductible. GAP insurance helps pay the difference between the amount of money your insurance company gives you and the amount you owe on your loan or lease. Without GAP coverage, you may be legally liable to cover the difference on your own.
